Several farmers staged a demonstration at Gandhipuram here on Saturday protesting against three road projects proposed in the district.

State president of Thamizhaga Vivasaigal Sangam M.R. Sivasami said the farmers sought alternative routes for three proposed bypass projects in the district.

The dry lands in the district had already been developed for different purposes. The three projects would affect nearly 1,500 acres of agricultural land that had wells and water source for farming. This would affect farming activity in the district and the livelihood of farmers.

The bypass road proposed from Kangeyampalayam to Mettupalayam would affect the Kangeyampalayam belt where water level was high in the open well even now, though the district had deficient rainfall this year. The alignment for this bypass should be modified and it should be from Neelambur to Mettupalayam, he said.

In the case of the Western Bypass, the current alignment should be modified so that the road does not pass through the city. In the case of S.S. Kulam bypass, instead of the bypass a flyover should be constructed at Kovilpalayam, he said.

Farmers from different parts of the district participated in the protest. They would wait for 15 days and then plan the next course of action, he said.
