Farmers plan demonstrations

May 23, 2010 05:30 pm | Updated 05:30 pm IST - Coimbatore:

Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangham will stage demonstrations in every district in the state from May 27.

President of the Sangham M.R. Sivasamy in a release here has said that price of coconut has fallen drastically because of higher productivity hitting farm workers hard. Hence is the demand to allow toddy tapping, he said.

Farmer are not willing to accept the dubious prohibition policy of the Government that allows selling of IMFL but not toddy. The demands include permission to tap toddy, permission to shoot wild animals that destroy crops, a raise of Rs. 5 in milk procurement price, use of manpower under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Generation scheme (MREGS) and to drop the proposal to acquire land for the Neelambur – Mettuppalayam bypass road.

On May 27, the demonstration would be at Karamadai and on May 28 at Krishnagiri.
