Members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, Coimbatore district unit, on Thursday submitted a petition to the Collector seeking early disbursement of compensation for their lands acquired in 1984 for setting up Bharathiar University.
Close to 800 acres were acquired in Marudamalai area for setting up the university campus.
Stating that the compensation announced was inadequate, the farmers moved court. In October 2007, a district court awarded compensation and that was not complied with, district secretary of the Association V.P. Elangovan said in the petition. An execution petition was filed in 2009 and even the court ordered attachment of movable properties of the university in July 2012.
When the farmers staged an agitation in front of the University on June 19, 2012 the revenue administration gave an assurance to them to sort out the issue in three months. But, even after seven months, there were no signs of the farmers getting the compensation, the memorandum added.
