Unidentified persons robbed Rs. 9 lakh from a farmer in Pollachi on Thursday, after distracting him by throwing a few currency notes on the road.

Pollachi East Police said that the victim, A. Balakrishnamurthy (61) of Unjavelampatty near Pollachi, had gone to office of the notary public on Thursday for signing a lease agreement for his coconut grove.

He signed the agreement with four persons – Murugesan, Veluchamy, Bakkiaraj and Balamurugan – and received Rs. 9 lakh from them in denominations of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 and kept it in the fuel tank cover of his bike.

When he was about to take his two-wheeler’s key from his pocket, a person told Balakrishnamurthy that there were a few rupee notes on the ground. Assuming that it could have fallen from his pocket, he took a Rs. 10 and Rs. 50 currency note found near his foot. He also found a few rupee notes near the rear wheel of the vehicle. After picking up the notes, he tried to start the bike and then he found the bag with money missing.

Police questioned a few persons who knew about the transaction. Inquiry is on.
