As part of the preparations for the 16 Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April 24, electronic voting machines (EVMs) have started arriving at Coimbatore amid tight police security.
Coimbatore district has 25,35,378 electors, of which 12,70,084 are male voters and 12,65,268 female voters and 26 others.
There are a total of 2,462 polling stations in 908 centres and the administration has proposed setting up of another 50 auxiliary polling centres and the total is likely to be 2,512.
EVMs will have to be provided for every polling station, including a 10 per cent reserve for replacing machines that develop snag. So far, 1,400 EVMs have arrived from Erode and another 3,350 from Vellore. At present the EVMs are kept in a strong room.
