The process of streamlining supply of enhanced free power for handloom and power loom units has been finalised in the district.
According to official figures, 19,202 handloom weavers and 10,680 power loom weavers are enjoying the benefit of free power supply up to 200 units bimonthly for handloom weavers with own work sheds, and 750 units for power loom weavers with own looms.
The enhanced power supply was an election promise of the AIADMK that was taken up for implementation after the government was formed earlier this year.
The handloom sector has been on a growth path in Erode, District Collector S. Prabakar said while participating in National Handloom Day celebrations at Chennimalai recently.
There are 190 handloom cooperative societies in the district employing 22,000 weavers, he said. He distributed Rs. 50,000 each to 569 weavers under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana. As many as 2,549 out of the planned 2,550 solar powered green houses have been constructed for weavers in the district, the Collector said.
