As many as five government schools in rural areas in Coimbatore and Pollachi will have English medium classes from this academic, said Chief Education Officer (CEO), Coimbatore, T. Rajendhiran.
The schools identified for implementation of the scheme are the government high schools at Sarkarsamakulam, Vadachithoor and Divansaputhoor and higher secondary schools at Theethipalayam and Kanjampatti. Two of the schools are in Coimbatore district and three in Pollachi.
According to the CEO, the schools will have two English medium divisions for Standard VI. Each class will have around 35 students.
Students who would like to have English as the medium of instruction would be admitted to the new divisions. Arrangements for the commencement of classes were under way, he said.
Headmaster of one of the schools identified for the programme said that the scheme could have been implemented at the time of the admission as it was a little difficult to segregate students two months after the commencement of classes. He added that many students joined private schools to study in English medium even if they found it difficult to pay the fee charged.
More students would have joined if the scheme was announced at the time of admission. But, after the implementation of the scheme more parents would prefer to send their children to the government schools, he added.
