Coimbatore Corporation will go in for energy-efficient LED bulbs in street lights as well, said Mayor P. Rajkumar. On Thursday, he inaugurated high-mast lights with LED bulbs at 10 locations in the city, according to a civic body release.

The cost of the project was Rs. 20 lakh.

He inaugurated the lights at the Kapikadai Junction where the Sathyamangalam Road meets the Kalapatti Road, at the Karattumedu Junction on Sathyamangalam Road, at the Sathyamangalam Road-Vilankurichi Road Junction, near the main storage reservoir, and at other places in the city, the release said.

He also switched on the lights on Sanganoor Road, Marudhamalai Road-Thondamuthur Road junction and in Kovilmedu.

At the venue, he also heard the people’s grievances and assured them of necessary action.

Later talking to The Hindu , Mr. Rajkumar said that Corporation had spent the money from its general funds to light those areas that were unlit or poorly lit.

The objective was to reduce accidents.

In the days to come, the Corporation would go in for more such energy efficient bulbs and a list of areas, where such lights were to be installed, was being drawn up. The civic body intended to install the lights not only in added areas but also those parts of the old city that was not sufficiently illuminated.

The Mayor pointed out that at places where the civic body required 240 watts, it was going for lights with 120 watts and at places where it would use 70-watt bulb, it was using 38 watt LED bulb, he added.
