Shop erected without authorisation demolished
Corporation officials on Thursday removed several encroachments constructed near the Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand in the city.
According to Corporation officials, several shops functioning near the bus stand had expanded their shops beyond the space permitted by the civic body.
Further, instances of shops functioning without permission had also come to light.
After several complaints were lodged with the Corporation, Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Corporation Commissioner G. Latha had given instructions to remove the encroachments.
The Corporation officials initiated a drive on Thursday and began inspecting all the shops. One shop that had been erected without authorisation was demolished.
Encroachments in several shops were also removed during this drive.
Further, the officials also removed the temporary shops that had encroached upon the pavements inside and outside the bus stand.
The officials also imposed a fine of Rs. 1.60 lakh on two contractors who were found charging higher than the Corporation-fixed rates for public toilets located outside the bus stand on Dr. Nanjappa Road.
The Corporation officials warned the contractors to adhere to the terms of contract failing which stringent action would be initiated.
