The Coimbatore Corporation on Wednesday removed encroachments in Ganapathy and Flower Market. According to Corporation, following a Madras High Court order, the civic body had asked the encroachers in the Flower Market area to remove the temporary structures they had put on Mettupalayam Raod, Mecricar Road, and a couple of neighbouring streets in the area.

On Wednesday, as part of the mass cleaning drive in Ward 24 and 25, the officials asked the shop keepers to remove the encroachments, almost all of which were temporary structures. After the shopkeepers removed the structures from about 20 shops, the Corporation officials removed slabs and other structures that had eaten upon road space and buried the drain.

They carried out a similar drive on the aforementioned streets asking shop keepers to ensure that they did not use the road space.

The Corporation officials said that they had carried out the action after holding talks with the City Police officials.

Similarly in Ganapathy, the officials removed a thatched roof structure that belonged to a political party.

The officials said that following instructions from the Mayor and Commissioner, they removed the structure which was on a street in Kamarajapuram.

The residents of the area had petitioned the Mayor a couple of months ago and had represented again at the last Tuesday’s grievance meeting.

They said that the thatched roof structure, which until recently served as a house for an elderly couple, was used the members of the political party to conduct meetings, play games, and also consume liquor.

Their activities had destroyed the peace in the area and the residents somehow wanted the structure removed.

A fortnight ago, the Corporation in association with the Local Planning Authority had placed under lock and seal buildings that were in violation of rules.
