Elephant, farmer electrocuted

An electric fence around a plantain grove at Lingapuram near Mettupalayam claimed the lives of an elephant, and an aged farmer on Monday.

Lingapuram is one of the villages in Sirumugai frequented by wild elephants.

The incident occurred at the farm of Ramaiyan (74), who has four acres.

As was the practice among farmers there, he too had electrified the barbed fence to protect the crops from wild animals. The police said that Ramaiyan, who was staying in a shed, came into contact with the live wire when he came out hearing the trumpets of a wild elephant.

Villagers saw the elephant, and the man dead early morning and informed the police.

Inspection by Tangedco officials has confirmed that the fence was electrified drawing power from his house.

A post-mortem examination was conducted on the animal’s carcass by forest veterinary officer N.S. Manoharan.
