Forest officials, in a night-long effort on Monday, rescued a 20-year-old elephant and its three-year-old calf from a 20-ft-deep pit at Kondayannur near Anaikatti, in the outskirts of Coimbatore.

On information from the members of the public, District Forest Officer M. Senthil Kumar deputed a team led by Range Officer M. Nazir to the spot. On reaching the scene, the forest officials decided to create a ramp on one side of the pit for the elephants to come up. An earthmover was used to create the ramp, but the effort initially faced resistance from the elephant since it must have thought that the calf may be harmed.

The rescue operation that commenced at 11 p.m. on Monday came to an end at 5 a.m. Finally, the elephants came out of the pit using the ramp and moved into the forest without charging at anyone, Mr. Nazir said.
