Elephant abandons calf

A six-month-old female elephant calf was found abandoned at Kaithakollai near Devala in Gudalur Forest Division on Monday. Forest department personnel staff tried to reunite it with its herd.

After repeated attempts failed, personnel took it to the place where it was found and were in wait of its herd with hope that the adult elephants would come in search of the calf.

A four-year-old black leopard was found dead at Longwood Shola beat of Kotagiri Range in The Nilgiris North Division on Tuesday.

According to the forest department personnel, nature of injuries suffered by the carnivore have led to suspicion that it could have got killed in an in-fight with a carnivore.

Post-mortem

Post-mortem examination revealed that the dead animal had two foetuses.
