Election to the governing councils of the four Agro Engineering and Service Cooperative Centres in the district, will be held on April 5 after 12 years.
Each of the governing councils will have Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes member, two women, and four general members.
These members will, in turn, elect a president and vice-president.
The governing councils in these centres at Avinashi, Kanakkampalayam, Udumalpet, and Palladam were elected in 1996.
Its tenure ended in 2001, official sources told The Hindu.
Since then, block level Assistant Directors of Agriculture in the respective areas had been functioning as special officers to run these centres.
Liquidated
There were two more centres at Dharapuram and Vellakoil in the district, but were liquidated recently.
“The centres, created in the early 1970s, play a vital role in farm development activities as it helps the government implement various schemes at the ground level by charging a minimal 10 per cent of the project cost as service charge,” said Joint Director of Agriculture Mohammed Kalimullah Sherif.
Only the registered members of the respective centres will be entitled to contest for the governing councils.
Mr. Sherif said that the nominations had to be filed with the designated election officers on March 29.
The results will be declared on April 9.
