Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has requested the City Corporation Commissioner for the list of bus stops on city roads in order to offer suggestions for relocating the ones close to either a traffic signal or a road turning.
The issue of shifting these bus stops has been discussed many times at district road safety-cum-traffic advisory meetings, but no action has been taken so far. Buses parked at these bus stops often lead to traffic jams as they obstruct the movement of vehicles.
Bus stops near Lakshmi Mills Junction, JM Bakery Junction, Ramanathapuram Junction, GP Theatre signal are a few examples of such ill-conceived bus stands.
Even recently, the City Police Commissioner P. Sivanandi and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N. Kamini had mooted a proposal for shifting such bus stops on Avanashi Road, where the police are trying to streamline the functioning of six-lane traffic system in the first phase.
CCC Secretary K. Kathirmathiyon, said that at the district road safety-cum-traffic advisory committee meeting held on October 22 the Corporation had sought approval for erecting new bus shelters. Mr. Kathirmathiyon suggested that a joint inspection of bus stops should be carried out by the Corporation, Highways Department, Transport Department and Transport Corporations so that problems of this nature could be avoided in the future.
The consumer body has also offered to provide suggestions on relocating the bus stops. Mr. Kathimathiyon pointed out that the consumer body required a list of all the 261 bus stops.
At the meeting, the civic body had provided a list of 53 in East Zone and 31 in West Zone. CCC sought the list of the remaining 177 bus stops to carry out an inspection.
