Replicating last year, Coimbatore City Police are working to turn December 31 night free from road traffic accidents caused by New Year revelry.
Last year, no fatal accidents were reported during New Year celebrations in the city limits.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sujit Kumar said that extensive arrangements were being planned for accident-free New Year celebrations.
“We are planning to create more check points on arterial roads this year to prevent drunk drive, rash and negligent driving. Celebrations will be arranged at the check points to entertain those caught for such offences.” said Mr. Kumar.
Last year, motorists were checked at 22 spots on main roads in the city to prevent drunk driving. Ambulances were also deployed at alternative locations to attend to emergencies.
Similar to last year, the police will hold discussions with bar attached hotels and taxi companies to reduce drunk driving. To prevent speeding, barricades will be placed at every 200 m on main roads.
The police have also plans to erect flex boards advising the public to celebrate New Year in a responsible manner, without leading to accidents.
