An ecology park is all set to come up alongside the irrigation tank at Kulathupudur here as part of a Rs. 2.95-crore project planned by the District Planning Committee to rejuvenate/beautify and increase the potential of the presently lesser utilised Kulathupudur and Mannarai irrigation tanks.
The committee, with district panchayat chairman M. Shanmugam and District Collector G. Govindaraj as ex-officio chairman and vice-chairman, respectively, has sought expeditious release of funds from the State Planning Commission to start the works.
The idea of an ecology park was incorporated into the rejuvenation package to give the people an opportunity to breathe fresh air and enjoy the leisure on public green areas.
“We will ensure that the locality have abundance of trees, especially species like bamboo, which release more oxygen, and beautify the banks of the Kulathupudur tank with plants and shrubs,” District Planning Committee chairman M. Shanmugam told The Hindu .
Apart from the ecology park, embankment at the tank would be strengthened and desilting carried out so as to ensure maximum amount of water was stored during the rainy season.
According to the blueprint drawn for improvement and rehabilitation of Mannarai tank and appurtenant structures, damages caused to the sluice No: 2 would be rectified and supply channels would be strengthened.
Improvements to surplus weir and surplus course, too, would be carried out besides clearing blocks in the outlets.
“We have also planned to provide a walkway alongside the Mannarai tank and make improvements to the landscape on its banks for recreational activities,” Mr. Shanmugam said.
