Residents of Suriyampalayam in Erode Corporation came to the collectorate carrying contaminated drinking water in plastic bottles to petition the Collector seeking his intervention to ensure distribution of good drinking water for the people of that locality.

Claiming that there are about 2,000 families living in Perumalmalai Village Gandhi Nagar area, they complained that they faced difficulty in collecting drinking water as there were only two street taps for every 100 houses to collect water. “Mostly we got water only once in two days.

Foul smell

Adding difficulty to this situation was the contamination of drinking water as drainage is getting mixed with the water distributed through these pipes for the last 15 days and emits a foul smell. We don’t have alternate sources for getting drinking water – such as bore wells or open wells – and have to go as far as two km. to get water for drinking and cooking”, the petitioners said.

The residents made an appeal to the district administration to test the quality of the water.
