A draft City Development Plan (CDP) presented at the Corporation council meeting here on Thursday for improvement of infrastructure to cater to the needs of Tirupur Corporation in 2021-22 fiscal has stressed the need for carrying out development projects to the tune of Rs 3,271.8 crore.
The draft plan document was prepared by Quadra Architects Private Limited (QAPL), Chennai.
QAPL's director V. Priya later told The Hindu that the project paper was prepared by pegging the projected population in 2021-22 at 13.5 lakh against the 8.9 lakh population in the city after the merger of the two adjoining municipalities and eight village panchayats planned this year.
To improve drinking water supply, the document had suggested works for an outlay of Rs 523.2 crore which include new schemes, more overhead tanks and better supply lines.
Likewise, traffic improvements were proposed at Rs 382.24 crore incorporating proposals to set up a new bus stand at Veerapandi, conversion of earthen roads to cement roads for a total stretch of 420 km, new bridges and creation of new roads to a length of 300 km.
“We have evaluated the outlay based on a comprehensive mobility plan prepared to study the needs,” Ms Priya told this paper.
The remaining amount of the total draft outlay for the CDP covers improvement of sanitation and slums, development of parks and creation of better medical facilities.
The MDMK councillors came to the council hall draped in plastic clothes in order to protest the lethargic drives being carried out by Corporation officials against the indiscriminate use of plastic cups and covers.
They also staged a walk out on the issue.
