Corporation Commissioner and Special Officer R. Sadheesh on Wednesday inspected the dormitory being constructed at Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital here for the attendants of patients.

Since Salem GH is a referral hospital for patients from six districts, over hundreds of people are treated as in-patients everyday, while over 1,000 are treated as out-patients.

Since the attendants are not allowed to be with the patients during night hours and in emergency wards, they are forced to sleep in the parking area and in the available vacant space in the premises.

A proposal was submitted for constructing a dormitory to benefit the attendants.

Under the National Urban Livelihood Mission, the rooms are constructed at a cost of ₹50 lakh. Officials said that 50 people can be accommodated any time free of cost. The Commissioner asked the officials to expedite the works so that it can be put to use earlier.

The Commissioner later inspected Amma canteens on the hospital premises in Kumarasamipatti and Hasthampatti.

He checked the quality of the food served there and inspected the store room, kitchen, and provisions used for cooking.

He interacted with the members of the self-help group who run the canteens and asked them to ensure that only quality food was served. Assistant Executive Engineer K. Selvaraj, Assistant Engineer P. Kalaivani and other officials were present.
