Monday's Corporation Council meeting began with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors staging a protest.
Dressed in black shirt, the councillors, led by their leader V.N. Udayakumar, shouted slogans against the removal of the photograph of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi from the office of the South Zone Chairman P. Pari.
They also took strong exception to the way the AIADMK MLAs placed Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's photograph at Mayor's cabin.
Appeal
All the DMK councillors trooped to the well of the Council Hall. Mayor R. Venkatachalam's fervent pleas to the councillors to get back to their seats failed. The decibel the DMK councillors generated was so high that the Mayor's appeal on the mike got drowned.
The AIADMK councillors too started shouting slogans against the DMK councillors. Led by their leader P. Rajkumar, many councillors engaged in a heated argument with their DMK counterparts.
Congress members soon came to the DMK councillors' support and this added fuel to the fire. It was a free for all for about 15 minutes. Other councillors looked helpless.
The meeting began only after Mr. Udayakumar asked the DMK councillors to get back to their seats. At the end of the meeting, he also attempted to bring in a resolution condemning the AIADMK MLAs' actions.
Mr. Venkatachalam appealed to the councillors to let bygones be bygones.
