Members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led by former Members of Parliament M. Kannappan and M. Ramanathan staged a protest in Gandhipuram on Saturday to condemn the “assault” on Ward 49 Councillor Meena Loganathan.

The protestors said that it was deplorable that the ruling AIADMK had let loose its men on a woman councillor for raising her voice in protest inside the Corporation Council Hall on Thursday, after the Budget Session.

They said that retaliation in the scale and manner was uncalled for and only betrayed the manner in which Mayor S.M. Velusamy managed the AIADMK-majority Council. If a woman Councillor did not have security inside and outside the Council Hall, the same also showed the kind of security women enjoyed in the society.

By attacking Councillor Meena Loganathan the AIADMK had sent a wrong message to the public. The DMK leaders who spoke at the meeting said that by registering a case under stringent sections of the law against Meena Loganathan, who was assaulted, the Police had shown that they were under pressure.

Ms. Loganathan said that the Police should initiate action against the AIADMK councillors. If they failed to do so, it would send a wrong message to the society and encourage wrongdoers.

Councillors A. Nandhakumar, S.M. Samy, Kumudham Kuppusamy, R. Ravindiraraj, P.V. Subramaniam and others were present.

‘Unfortunate’

Communist Party of India (Marxist) District Secretary and Councillor V. Ramamoorthy has condemned the attack on Councillor Meena Loganathan. In a release he had said that it was quite unfortunate that the AIADMK Councillors chose to attack Ms. Loganathan when she attempted to raise her voice towards the end of the Budget session of the Council on Thursday last.

It was against the Council norms, a brute show of strength and unacceptable, he had said.

The Mayor should have stopped his party men from attacking a woman Councillor. He did not and it was a lapse on his part.
