The members of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) on Wednesday staged a mass demonstration wearing black clothes to mark the 25th year of Babri Masjid demolition.
Around 1,400 people, including 400 women, took part in the demonstration that started in front of South Taluk office here around 10 a.m.
The protesters demanded allotment of the disputed land to Muslims and punishment to those involved in the demolition of the mosque. They also displayed placards against communal politics.
Senior leaders of the party addressed the gathering. Though TMMK had obtained permission for the demonstration, traffic on Huzur Road was disrupted till noon.
Meanwhile, the police detained and removed 231 members of Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi (MJK) for attempting to lay siege to the railway station around 10.30 a.m.
The police also arrested 871 members of Hindu Munnani who staged a protest in front of Thiruvalluvar bus stand at Gandhipuram calling for the construction of Ram temple at the disputed land in Ayodhya. Both MJK and Hindu Munnani had not obtained permission for the protests. Those detained were released in the evening.
Tirupur
The members of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, Manithaneya Jananayaka Katchi and Social Democratic Party of India staged separate demonstrations here to mark Babri Masjid demolition anniversary on Wednesday.
Communist Party of India district secretary M. Subramanian, CPI leader and former MP K. Subbarayan and Congress district president (Tirupur urban district) R. Krishnan spoke against the Babri Basjid demolition at the protest organised by Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam near Railway station.
Meanwhile, Hindu Munnani members organised a demonstration near Corporation office with a demand that Ram temple should be constructed at Ayodhya.
