Members of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front (TNUEF) staged a demonstration seeking burial ground for the 900-odd Dalit families in Athappagoundenpudur and Ravathur areas of Irugur Town Panchayat.

The demonstrators were led by their leader P. Sampath and convenor U.K. Sivagnanam. Whenever there was a death in any of the families, they were forced to bury the bodies along the roadside. There had been representations many a times to the authorities and there had not been any concrete effort to resolve the situation. The demonstrators urged the government to focus on the “genuine and long pending demand” of the Dalit families in the area at least when the district was gearing up for the World Classical Tamil Conference.
