For the residents of Sri Vinayaka Nagar in Kovaipudur, the Coimbatore Corporation taking up a road work has created but not solved problems. The civic body took up the work sometime in the third week of April by spreading blue metal to start the work to lay the road.

As of June 21, the work remains incomplete, giving a tough time to residents to move around, complains S. Ananthakalyana Krishnan, a resident.

In the first place, the residents were not in need of a road there as the existing road was in good condition, the residents say.

But before elections, the Corporation hurriedly dumped the blue metal and also spread it over, covering the entire road space.

Thereafter nothing much happened and the residents continue to use the road, much to their discomfort, he adds.

Even walking on the road has become difficult, complains 79-year-old S. Vidyasankaran. He had to take his wife to a hospital a few days ago and she could not walk because the surface was uneven.

The loose stones also gave tough time to two bicyclist who fell onto the ground, he says.

Sources in the Coimbatore Corporation say that the civic body gave sanction for rebuilding the road and two others in the area in Ward 89 at Rs. 32 lakh. The contractor executing the work ought to have completed it more than a month ago, but he could not.

They also say that the delay in execution was on account of the Corporation delaying payment to the contractor on account of funds shortage.

Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan says that he has given instruction to the officials to sort out the matter and resume work at the earliest.
