Keshavan (name changed) passed out from an affiliated college of Bharathiar University in 2012 and got a job in May 2013. But he is not sure whether he will be able to continue because of his inability to produce a degree certificate.
He joined a company with the help of a provisional certificate on the understanding that he would submit the degree certificate within 10 days. But his attempts to get a degree certificate went in vain, even after applying for it under the tatkal scheme.
He says that the office of the Controller of Examinations has been giving him many excuses but not the certificate.
Under the tatkal scheme, a fee of Rs. 1,000 is paid for getting the degree certificate within seven days, and Rs. 500 within 14 days.
His company has given him one more chance, the last, to produce the degree certificate. He is in a fix. Many like him, who had joined jobs with provisional certificates are under the threat of losing their jobs because of their inability to produce degree certificates within the deadline specified by companies.
They have approached the Coimbatore Consumer Cause to enable them find a solution. The organisation has urged the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. James Pitchai, and Principal Secretary of the Higher Education Department on July 7 to provide degree certificates to those who had completed the courses in 2012.
In a letter to them, the organisation’s secretary K. Kathirmathiyon, had demanded that at least those who had applied under the tatkal scheme be provided certificates within seven days of the receipt of the letter.
“It is learnt that Bharathiar University is providing degree certificates under the tatkal scheme to those who had completed degree programmes in 2012, from Monday. The status of those who have not applied under the tatkal scheme is not clear,” said Mr. Kathirmathiyon.
John Michael Raj, Controller of Examinations (in-charge) said that from the time he took over last week, he had signed more than 100 degree certificates to be provided under the tatkal scheme.
“Those who have completed degree in 2012 are being given certificates under the old format and those who had completed degree in 2013 the new encrypted certificates. There are additional formalities to be done by candidates who are applying for the encrypted certificates. This might cause some delay. But there is no delay in providing certificates to those apply under the old format,” Mr. Michael Raj said.
