The focus of Dabbawalas (the men who carry lunch boxes to office goers in Mumbai) was to only serve customers as they considered the customers to be gods.
In the process of satisfying the customers they got the Six Sigma certification, though that was not their aim, said Subodh Sangle, a Dabbawala, who addressed the students of Sankara Institute of Management Science here on Saturday.
A release from the college says that Mr. Sangle told the audience that their motto was that the customer shall not stay hungry, establish an unbreakable bond with customers and satisfying the customer with on-time delivery of lunch boxes. Each of the 5,000 Dabbawalas worked with dedication, discipline and passion.
They carried around two lakh lunch boxes a day with each one travelling 60 – 70 km a day. In the process they had established the reputation of committing an error of 1 for every 16 million transactions.
Earlier the Dabbawala group leader Narayanji entered the campus on a bicycle in typical Dabbawala style.
