Cycling set to speed away to bigger glory in Coimbatore

January 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - Coimbatore:

The second edition of the premier cycling event, the MVS Coimbatore Criterium, will be held at the Kari Motor Speedway (KMS) at Chettipalayam here on February 8.

The inaugural edition brought in the competitor and spectator crowd in large numbers. This time around, it looks even better with entries flowing in from all age groups.

“Last year, the youngest was a four-year-old and the eldest 67. That’s the kind of excitement the event has in store,” said Arjun Balu, former national motor rallyist and Race Director for the event.

“We wanted to have an event with the highest safety standards and that’s one reason we chose to conduct it on a closed circuit, the KMS circuit. The 2.1-km track is of high standards. It’s going to be held under controlled environment with strong medical backup and state-of-art timing facility,” he added.

The opener saw four categories but this year it has been increased to nine. So there’s going to be races for all — professionals, amateurs (men and women) and kids of ages 4-13. Riders can participate as individuals or as part of a team.

The event, which is held in association with the Tamil Nadu Cycling Association, has attracted a host of sponsors which include Scott Cycles, Tissot, Isuzu, Elgi Equipments and The Residency (hospitality).

Scott also announced its ‘Future Stars Program’ on Tuesday. The top three finishers who are non-contracted will be eligible to ride away with the ‘Athletes Sponsorship Program’ by Scott Sports India. This is exclusive to the under-18 men riders and the winners will get the opportunity to compete for a full biking kit, which includes world class quality cycling gear and kit from Scott along with a bike.

“We are delighted to be part of the MVS Coimbatore Criterium. Scott has made a commitment towards creating awareness about cycling in India and this event is just a start,” said Jaymin Shah, Country Head, Scott Sports India. “The city, with so many budding talents and racing champions, certainly has the potential to be the cycling capital,” he added.
