A cultural carnival featuring school students in the district marked the Children's Day celebrations of the Education Department held at the Little Flower Convent Matriculation Higher Secondary School here on Sunday.

The programme featured dances, performances on various musical instruments and plays. A skit on Veerapandiya Kattabomman, erstwhile chieftain of Panchalankurichi in the present Tuticorin district, was the highlight of the show.

The students enacted how Kattabomman waged a war with the British almost six decades before the Indian war of independence in 1857 and was eventually hanged by the British unceremoniously on a tamarind tree at Kayathar in Tuticorin district.

The Collector, C. Samayamoorthy, gave away prizes to the winners of various competitions conducted by the department as a prelude to the Children's Day celebrations.

The competitions were held in poetry, elocution, folk arts and drama, among others.

Chief Educational Officer T. Rajendiran, and director of Roots Group of Industries Kavidasan were present.
