In a bid to ensure instant registration of particulars, retrieval of data and real-time sharing of details of crime and criminals, the ambitious Crime and Criminal Tracking Networking System (CCTNS) was launched in Coimbatore district on Monday.
Inspector-General of Police (West Zone), S. Davidson Devasirvatham inaugurated the facility in the presence of Superintendent of Police - Coimbatore Rural, M. Sudhakar and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Periyanaickenpalayam, S. Mohan.
The project has been implemented at a cost of Rs 113 crore.
The system covers 2,899 locations. The system will enable police stations to register FIR and case details on the computer and send information to the State Data Centre (SDC) for storage and retrieval. Citizens’ service has been envisaged as an important component of the project. The portal http://eservices.tnpolice.
gov.in has been designed with the facility for citizens to lodge complaints online. They can also track the status of their complaints/petitions online. On submitting a petition or complaint, the person doing so will be provided with a computer- generated receipt.
Digitisation of records and online feeding of particulars is aimed at improving the efficiency of the police in dealing with crime and criminals. Describing the system, Mr. Sudhakar said that it was an exhaustive and elaborate tool for storage, retrieval of particulars instantly and sharing of information on a real-time basis.
Mr. Devasirvatham said that the system will enable quick and easy resolving of man-missing cases besides vehicle thefts.
In the first phase, the CCTNS was launched in Kancheepuram, Thruvanammalai, Vellore, Cuddalore and Villupuram districts besides Salem and Coimbatore City Commissionerates on June 5, 2013. The same was launched on August 1 in Namakkal, Krishnagiri, and Karur districts and Tirunelveli Commissionerate. With effect from August 19, the facility has been launched in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Perambalur, and Pudukottai. The particulars fed into the system under CCTNS can be accessed by officials from the State Crime Record Bureau and National Crime Records Bureau.
