Amsaveni (24), of Indira Nagar in Sowripalayam, and her husband Pugalendhi (31) suffered burns when the latter tried to save his wife from a self-immolation bid in their house in the wee hours of Friday.

Police sources said that the couple got married about a year-and-a-half-ago. They quarrelled the previous night and the woman is said to have taken the extreme step.

While Amsaveni suffered 90 per cent burns and was in a critical condition, Pugalendhi suffered 20 per cent burns. They were admitted in the burns ward of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

Persons feeling suicidal can call non-governmental organisation Sneha in its 24-hour helpline no. 044-24640050 to get over such momentary extreme decisions.
