Special teams of the Coimbatore City Police have arrested a couple from Andhra Pradesh on the charge of luring youth with employment opportunities in foreign firms and cheating them of several lakhs.

Employment

City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu told reporters that Karunairaj, son of Gnanamuthu from Andhra Pradesh, had issued advertisements in newspapers claiming to be the managing director of a Singapore-based firm and inviting applications from candidates for the post of general manager of the company in India.

The advertisements also stated that the annual salary would be Rs. 18 lakh. On seeing the advertisement, complainant Pradeep Phillipose sent an e-mail to the accused. Responding to it, the accused had asked him to come to Tirupati and later to Vellore.

He had told the complainant to come with cash and jewellery to impress the owner of the company.

When the complainant turned up, the accused citing various reasons took possession of the cash and jewellery and decamped with the booty.

Similarly, Joel Jayakumar of Peelamedu was also cheated.

On complaints from both of them, the City Crime Branch registered a case and special teams were formed.

The teams on inquiring at various places in Andhra Pradesh finally got a tip off that the accused along with his wife was staying in Chennai.

The teams arrested the couple in Chennai and recovered jewellery worth several lakhs, cellular phones, wrist watches, laptops and a luxury car, all worth over Rs. 30 lakh from them.

Inquiries revealed that the accused had cheated many persons. Further investigations are on.
