The Coimbatore Corporation will complete the underground drainage (UGD) work in another 14 months, Mayor S.M. Velusamy has said.
A release from the Corporation quoting Mr. Velusamy said that since the present Council came into existence, the Corporation had completed laying 180 km UGD pipeline.
The release said the Mayor along with Commissioner in-charge S. Sivarasu, MLA R. Doraisamy, Deputy Mayor Leelavathi Unni and others inspected the site proposed for establishing the sewage treatment plant in Ondipudur on Sunday
The present Council’s achievements were in contrast to what the previous Corporation administration had achieved. Between 2009, when the scheme was launched, and 2012, when the last Council’s period ended, the civic body had managed to lay only 158 km pipeline.
The Corporation under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was supposed to lay 583 km pipeline.
During the period, the Corporation had managed to repair only 55 km roads that were damaged during the execution of the UGD scheme. The delay in, or poor, execution of the road repair work had troubled the residents, some of who also sustained injuries in accidents.
But, under the current dispensation, the Corporation had managed to repair 175 km roads.
At the current pace of work, the Corporation would be able to complete the work in 14 months by laying 247 km pipeline.
Likewise, the Corporation would soon complete the sewage treatment plant work in Ondipudur. After a rather long hiatus, the Corporation had managed to speed up the STP work. It had bought 14.34 acre land for the purpose at Rs. 15 crore in August 2012. The Corporation also floated tender in December 2012 for construction. It would be able to complete the tender process in another 10 days and direct the contractor to complete the work at the earliest.
The STP would have a capacity to treat 60 million litres a day.
The release quoting the Mayor also said that the civic body had made a similar progress in completing the storm water drainage work. In the past 15 months, the Corporation had managed to complete 300 plus works.
