The Coimbatore Corporation has drawn up plans to construct a walkalator in Gandhipuram to facilitate easy movement of pedestrians across the busy junction.
The civic body sources said that with the Highways Department completing the first leg of the Gandhipuram flyover, the corporation has set in process the motion to build the walkalator.
It will have entry and exit points on the western side of Nanjappa Road, on Cross Cut Road, the eastern side of Nanjappa Road and another one near the SETC bus stand.
Closed structure
It will be a completely closed structure with escalator and walkalator.
The total length would be around 400 m.
It was at the design stage. The corporation had a drawing on hand but it would have to consult the Highways Department and City Traffic Police before finalising the design as it would have to take into account the height and width of the proposed structure to facilitate easy movement of vehicles on the ground.
The idea was to help people move in and out of the bus stands in the area and also reach the shops on Cross Cut Road.
Only when the Corporation finalised the design for the project it would be able to calculate the total cost and thereafter talk about the funding pattern, the sources said and added that it could take it up under Smart Cities.
