The identified land belonged to the Commissioner for Municipal Administration and would be an ideal choice to house the bus stand temporarily.

After much deliberation, the Coimbatore Corporation has proposed the shifting of the town bus stand to a 3.5-acre plot near the Coimbatore Central Prison grounds.

In a resolution the civic body passed at the last Council meeting, held here on Monday, the Corporation said that to decongest Gandhipuram where the flyover construction work is underway, it had taken up discussions with the district administration and the Coimbatore City Police and as a consequence of that had decided to shift the bus stand to the land near the Coimbatore Corporation VOC Park and the Prison.

The identified land belonged to the Commissioner for Municipal Administration and would be an ideal choice to house the bus stand temporarily. The resolution said that the Corporation would forward the proposal to the Commissioner for his approval.

The civic body’s move came after much delay as the deliberation had been going on since January this year as the flyover work progressed fast. It had held several rounds of meeting, both before and after identifying the land, said sources.

In February, the Corporation had said that it would temporarily shift the bus stand in the month. But even after the passage of six months, it had done very little. The Corporation had also shown tardy progress in shifting the 125 traders on the eastern side of Nanjappa Road and the three temples that belonged to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, the sources pointed out.

The shifting of the bus stand was suggested because 500 buses enter and exit the bus stand on a day.

As per the revised plan, the buses would enter the proposed bus stand through Nanjappa Road and exit through Park Gate.
