Coimbatore Corporation on Saturday foiled an attempt by a few people to grab a reserve site near Vellakinaru. According to senior Corporation officials, the Town Planning wing, on receipt of information that a few people had installed an idol, rushed to the spot after seeking police help.

The officials found an idol and a few residents trying to offer prayers on the reserve site, measuring 86 cents at Kumarasamy Layout in ward 26 in the North Zone. But the officials had to delay action as the police presence was not as strong as expected.

After the reinforcements arrived, the Corporation officials attempted to remove the idol but then the residents staged a protest. They also got the support of a Hindu group, whose members also descended on the spot. After some negotiations, the Corporation officials said that the residents came forward to remove the idol.

And they did by placing it outside the reserve site but on the land between the road and the reserve site boundary. The officials said that the residents had made a similar attempt two months ago but that was thwarted.
