With the Coimbatore office of the Public Works Department giving no-objection to its head office for the Coimbatore Corporation’s Kurichi bus stand project, all that remains is the government approval to start the project.

According to Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy, the civic body has proposed to construct the bus stand on the 3.87 acre land, sandwiched between roads that lead to Kurichi. The land used to be a water body and that necessitated PWD clearance.

With no water flowing into the area from the Big Tank, the Corporation had chosen the site as it is ideal for a bus stand, says P.A. Ganeshwaran, Executive Engineer, Coimbatore Corporation.

Mr. Ponnusamy says that the bus stand will have 25 bus bays, 27 shops, parking facility on about 7,000 sq.ft. and comes at Rs. 4 crore, which the civic body will take up with its fund. Once the PWD head office gives the clearance, the State Government will give the administrative sanction.

Thereafter, the Corporation will present the details of the project in a detailed project report for technical sanction to the Chief Engineer at the office of the Commissioner for Municipal Administration.

Mr. Ganeshwaran says that the bus stand will cater to the residents of the southern part of the city and will house both city and mofussil buses.

It will take the traffic load of the Ukkadam bus stand and Athupalam.

He also says that the new bus stand will adopt the green building concept, have solar panels, a small windmill, modern toilets, air-conditioned and ordinary waiting rooms, exclusive room for women, provision for establishing ATM centre, etc.

As for the developments on the Vadavalli bus stand, he says that the government has asked for a fresh drawing of the bus stand by accommodating more shops and parking lot.

The Coimbatore Corporation has proposed the establishment of bus stands at Kurichi and Vadavalli, areas that were merged recently with the Corporation.
