With the Gandhipuram flyover construction getting closer to completion, there is an urgency for the Coimbatore Corporation to make functional the waste transit station on Sathyamangalam Road, Ganapathy.

The corporation had to close down in 2015 the station that was handling close to 200 tonnes waste a day, as a portion of the building had to be demolished to facilitate the flyover construction.

The station became operational in 2009 when the corporation implemented solid waste management scheme under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

Coimbatore Integrated Waste Management Company Pvt. Ltd., the company that transports the waste from the transit station in Ganapathy and also from similar stations in Peelamedu and Ukkadam, has now asked the corporation to do take up the construction at the earliest.

Sources said that the company wanted the corporation to rebuild the station at the earliest and that too at the corporation’s expense because it was losing business.

According to the agreement between the company and the corporation, the latter paid around ₹1,000 for every tonne of waste compacted and a little more for the waste transported from there to the processing facility in Vellalore.

With the Ganapathy transit station dysfunctional, the corporation directly handled the waste resulting the company losing revenue - both from transportation and processing.

The so-called diversion of waste from there to Peelamedu and Ukkadam transit stations was not happening as the stations were already over utilised, the sources said.

Corporation officials said the company had written to the civic body a few months ago asking for the facility to be rebuilt. The corporation was actively considering the proposal but was waiting for the flyover construction to get over.

It would also finalise the underground sewer line alignment in the area.

They added that the proposal to rebuild was for around ₹4 crore as the entire facility need not be rebuilt. The corporation would soon finalise the details and take up the construction.
