Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has urged the Coimbatore Corporation to not misuse the school ground in the Corporation Middle School at Ramasamy Nagar, Kavundampalayam. The party’s Youth Wing Secretary V. Easwaran said in a release that the 50-plus-year-old school served more than 500 students.
It had buildings in a corner of the campus and the rest was ground. News reports suggested that the Corporation planned to construct a shopping complex in a corner of the ground. If there was any such move, the Corporation should immediately give it up, for the ground was meant for students’ physical development.
At a time when students’ involvement in sports and games was on the decline, the Corporation trying to build the complex would only make things worse. Instead, the Corporation should encourage students to take up sports and games in a big way.
Neither the State Government nor Corporation could afford to buy land to construct grounds in the current circumstances where land availability had come down and the land price had skyrocketed. The Corporation should try to preserve the ground and also encourage students to make the most of it.
He has added that the party would carry out a campaign to bring about awareness among the public on the issue on November 6.
