The Coimbatore Corporation has started cleaning and sprucing up important junctions in the city. According to Commissioner G. Latha, the civic body has taken up improving junctions by repairing damaged portions, cleaning and maintaining the plants and painting the junctions in orange and white.
The Corporation had started the work first at junctions on arterial roads. In the Central Zone, the civic body had taken up the work at junctions on Avinashi Road, Huzur Road, State Bank of India Road, Arts College Road and other places.
At junctions where the pavements were in a bad shape, the Corporation was replacing slabs or tiles to make them pedestrian-friendly as the work was not only about beautification.
The civic body chose to take up the work as the junctions were last improved prior to the World Classical Tamil Conference in June 2010.
In all the five zones, the Assistant Executive Engineers had been assigned the task of executing the junction improvement work and they had been given a time frame, said Ms. Latha.
Once the junction improvement work was complete, the Corporation was exploring the possibility of improving parking facilities in the city. In keeping with the new mobility plan, the civic body would introduce paid-parking system.
It would be an automated system where the users could also get prepaid cards. But this would come in to existence, once the Corporation decided the paid-parking places in consultation with the Coimbatore City Traffic Police.
