Convict commits suicide

A convict, sentenced for life on charges of a murder and lodged in the Central Prison here, was found hanging in his cell on Tuesday.

Venkataraman, trustee of leading educational institutions here, was awarded life term, for his involvement in the murder of one Vivek, a financier and his one-time friend, in day light in R S Puram on August 27, 1993.

The warden, who was on morning rounds, saw Venkataraman hanging on a bedsheet in his A-class cell and immediately informed higher authorities, who took him to government hospital.

However, the doctors declared him brought dead. The body was handed over to the relatives after postmortem this evening, the police said.
