Tension prevailed at the Erode Corporation Council meeting on Friday as members of the committee for retrieval of Periya Mariamman temple land and a group of people resorted to a demonstration in protest against the construction of a flyover at Panneerselvam Park junction.
Slogans raised
The committee members who came to witness the conduct of the Council meeting, started raising slogans when the Council passed a resolution agreeing to shift its drinking water pipelines at Panneerselvam Park junction to give way for the construction of the flyover.
The agitated members tried to gain entry into the Council Hall .
They later resorted to a demonstration in front of the civic body.
Agitators raised slogans urging the State Government not to implement the flyover project.
They, instead, wanted the government and the Corporation to implement the 80-foot road project to ease the traffic congestion in the area. Erode MLA N.K.K.P. Raja assured that steps would be taken to execute the road project.
Traffic flow
He, however, said that it was not possible to stop the construction of the flyover, as it was necessary to ensure smooth flow of traffic at the junction.
Earlier, at the Corporation Council meeting, a majority of the councillors opposed the implementation of flyover project.
Assurance
Councillors expressed concern that the implementation of the project would cause damage to the Periya Mariamman temple.
Replying to the questions, Mr. Raja assured that the construction of the flyover would not cause any damage to the temple.
Mayor Kumar Murugesh said that the Corporation do not have the power to stop the State Government's project.
