‘Construct underground drainage’

December 09, 2014 08:28 am | Updated 08:28 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Residents of the Arasur (East), near Sulur, have urged the district administration to construct an underground drainage in the village. Sewage and rainwater have begun to overflow on to the streets after the National Highways blocked a channel for a road expansion project.

A delegation of villagers led by A. Muthusamy submitted a petition to District Collector Archana Patnaik during the public grievances redress meeting at the Collectorate on Monday. The villagers claimed that the drainage water was overflowing into the houses located on the Annur and Saravanampatti Roads. The stagnant water was fast becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Action sought

Tea estate workers from Valparai have urged the district administration to take action against the employer who, they alleged, failed to make Provident Fund payments from 2000.

In a petition, K. Kannan, one of the workers, said that the company had deducted payments for PF from their salaries while failing to make contributions to the EPFO.

The petition said that the tea estate had failed to disburse gratuity to many retired workers.
