Saravanampatti Police on Friday morning detained temporarily a consignment containing tobacco products.
According to the police, during a vehicle checking operation in the small hours of Friday, the police personnel stopped a truck containing goods. While checking the contents of the goods, the police found 6,395 kg chewable tobacco products in 5,000 boxes. The cost of the consignment was estimated to be around Rs. 3 lakh.
The police said that driver Nagaraj of Kannampalayam of Nanjappa Nagar, Sulur, was carrying the consignment from Sowcarpet in Chennai to a shop on Range Gowda Street in the city. The police initially said they would register a case against the driver and send the consignment to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s designated officer in Coimbatore.
But after consultation with the legal officers, the police along with the FSSAI officers, Food Cell policemen and others escorted the truck to the State-border in Sathyamangalam saying that the consignment should not be brought back into the State.
The police’s move comes following a ban the State Government imposed on tobacco products.
