Conservancy workers, drivers, health workers and others on contract for the Coimbatore Corporation staged a protest at the civic body’s main office in Town Hall on Wednesday. Their grouse: the contractor (employer), who had engaged them on behalf of the Corporation, was not paying them in time.

Led by members of the CITU trade union, the workers said that for the past few months, the contractor was not paying them. They had represented the issue to the senior Corporation officials but had no relief.

And when they questioned the contractor, they were told that the Corporation had not paid him and therefore he was not able to pay them. Now, the Corporation as the principal employer was obligated to not just look into the issue but also ensure that they got their wages in time, the workers said.
