The Department of Social Work of Shri Nehru Maha Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science launched ‘Svastika Students’ Counselling Cell’ here on Monday.

The cell is to render professional services and free counselling to students to enhance their comprehensive development.

Inaugurating the cell, G. Senthilkumar, Psychiatric Social Worker, and Chairman of Helikx Institutes, Salem, spoke on enhancing mental health through therapeutic counselling. He also explained certain remedies such as cognitive and behavioural therapy, which were used in the counselling process.

Depression

Ashok Lunia, Secretary of the college, stressed the need for counselling in today’s environment, where students were turning victims of stress, depression and anxiety.

Those who lacked proper guidance, attention and support from the family and peers, and those who were not capable of handling certain situations by themselves, even resorted to suicide. The effort of the college in setting up the counselling cell was to address these problems, he added.

Final year students of the college attended the programme.

The cell would cater to students in the form of sessions on enhancing student motivation and improving mental health. It would also have regular individual counselling sessions.

Sessions

These sessions would be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday to Friday, according to the cell convenor M. Premalatha.
