Collector M. Karunagaran has assured the school students that deserving students aspiring for higher education would be able to avail education loans.

Chairing a meeting of education department and bank officials on Thursday, he said education loans were vital to help the students who were now aspiring for different fields such as engineering, medical, agriculture and pharmacy. In order to help them, he urged the headmasters of all schools must collect the mark sheets of high scoring students and forward them to the Chief Education Officer, who will scrutinise the same before sending it to the banks.

While Rs. 58 crore was given as education loan in 2010-11, the figure rose to Rs. 108 crore in 2011-12 before touching Rs. 119 crore in 2012-13. Education loans must exceed this figure in the coming academic year, the Collector said.

Chief Education Officer A. Gnanagowri and Lead District Bank Manager J. Vanangamudi took part in the meeting along with bankers and officials, according to an official release.
