Collector inspects Ooty market

Nilgiris District Collector Innocent Divya conducted an inspection at the Udhagamandalam Municipal Market as to whether the shops were using or selling banned plastic items.

The Collector instructed all the shopkeepers and merchants to not use plastic bags. On Saturday, a mass campaign to spread the message of a plastic-free Nilgiris among locals as well as tourists was conducted across the district by municipality officials.

A total of eight committees to check the usage of plastic within the district conducted checks in the municipalities of Udhagamandalam, Coonoor, Gudalur and Nelliyalam. Committees were also set up in all the town panchayats to do the same and more than 133 kg. of plastics were seized. Fines were imposed on violators and a total of ₹. 25,800 was collected.

The Collector urged tourists to stop bringing plastic into the Nilgiris as it was negatively impacting the environment.
