Coimbatore to speed up tax collection

March 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The Coimbatore Corporation on Saturday disconnected two water supply connections as the consumers had failed to pay tax.

The civic body’s move comes even as it hopes to collect Rs. 26.04 crore by the end of this month to reach 100 per cent tax collection for the current financial year. Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan has fixed weekly targets to the tax collectors in all the five zones.

According to officials in the civic body, he has asked tax collectors in the East Zone to show a 4 per cent increase every week, those in West, North and Central Zones to show a 3 per cent increase, and the collectors in the South Zone to show 5 per cent increase.

The corporation’s target for the current financial year is Rs. 124 crore.

They say that the collection increased by 7 per cent in January this year, and by 10 per cent in February to touch an overall collection of 79 per cent. But more needs to be done as the Commissioner has set a challenging target.

In a press release here, the corporation has said that water connection of those who have not paid property tax, and water charge for the first half-year by October 15 will be disconnected. In case of apartments, even if one of the consumer had not cleared the tax dues, the connection to the entire apartment complex would be cut. Therefore, the office-bearers of residents’ association should ensure that all the consumers paid taxes.

The corporation has asked commercial establishments to pay professional tax, and D&O license fee.
