The Plus-Two examinations results, announced on Friday, brought quite a few cheers for Coimbatore, which improved both its overall pass percentage and State-wide ranking.
Of the 36,573 students who appeared for the examinations in April 2014, 34,705 emerged successful. The pass percentage of 94.89 was an improvement of 1.94 per cent over the last year’s 92.95 per cent.
The district stood seventh in the State ranking, up from tenth position last year. As many as 3,068 students scored more than 1,100 this year, compared to 2,435 last year.
As is the case every year, girls with a 96.37 pass percentage continued to outshine boys who achieved 92.99 per cent.
Both the genders improved their performances compared to preceding year. A total of 15,966 boys and 20,607 girls appeared for the public examinations.
The total number of students who failed in one or more subjects has gone down by 1,869 compared to 2,543 last year.
Toppers With 1,188 marks, A. Megala of Vidyaa Vikas Matriculation Higher Secondary School (MHSS) stood first in the district. The top score last year was 1,180 marks.
The lone boy in the toppers list was S. Ravi Shankar of G.R.G. MHSS who scored 1,186 to come second. The district third rank was shared by two students, both of whom scored 1,185 – A. Dhivyalakshmi of Premier Vid Vikash MHSS and J. Melba of SRSI MHSS, Karamadai.
Honoured District Collector Archana Patnaik honoured the toppers. Chief Educational Officer A. Gnanagowri said that several initiatives were taken this year in both Government and private schools to improve the performance.
Students from 317 schools sent candidates for the Plus Two public examinations, up from 308 last year and 291 in 2012.
They include 173 private matriculation, 74 Government, 16 Corporation, four Municipality, 42 aided, five unaided schools run by Department of School Education, besides an Adi Dravidar welfare, one Anglo-Indian and one Social Welfare Department schools.
The toppers in Government schools are M. Preethi (1,160) of C.C.M.A. Government Girls Higher Secondary School on Raja Street, K. Krithika (1,151) of VRT Government Girls Higher Secondary School, and B. Ananthi (1,147), also from C.C.M.A. School. The topper in Municipal schools was Shifa Parveen (1,151) of Municipal School, Pollachi.
